Carnegie Corporation of New York requires a letter of inquiry submitted via this website to initiate the grant application process.
Letters of inquiry are accepted on a rolling basis; there are no deadlines. Please note that we do not seek, and rarely fund, unsolicited grant applications.
If your organization is interested in determining if project support from the Corporation is likely, and then submitting a letter of inquiry, please:
If you believe that your project aligns with the Corporation’s priorities and funding strategies as outlined in the program descriptions, a link to start an online application can be found on each Focus Area page within the Programs section of this website.
If the project does not align with the Corporation’s priorities and funding strategies as outlined in the program descriptions, please visit our list of philanthropic resources to help identify other possible funding sources.
Applicants will be notified via email if their letter of inquiry is declined, or if they have been invited to submit a full proposal. This process usually takes four to six weeks. Only full proposals that have been invited will be considered.
Due to the large volume of online submissions we receive, we cannot respond to phone calls requesting status updates on a submitted letter of inquiry.
Our eligibility questions are meant to help you identify the kinds of projects we typically fund. Answer the questions for the program area that is the best fit for your project, then review the answer immediately next to the question. If you’ve answered any of the questions differently than the answer, it is unlikely that your project aligns with the Corporation’s priorities and funding strategies — rather than apply, we encourage you to review this list of other philanthropic resources. If your answers do match the answer key responses, we strongly encourage you to review our grantmaking programs and grants database before submitting an letter of inquiry.
